Teaching

Innovative Alternatives for Education, Inc. (IAE),established 1994, received its 501 C3 designation in April 1995. It is the non-profit education and training component of Agape Ministries of Charleston. IAE originally designed to concentrate on academic/athletic collaborative programming for the at-risk youth of this inner-city.

The inaugural component of IAE, Inc., Project "Rescue"/PCSmarts now in its twelfth year, originated with two years of funding from the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Grant and from other community resources. The "Rescue" portion of this project grew out of the Charleston InnerCity "Midnight" Basketball Association developed by the president of Agape Ministries of Charleston, Dr. Wilson.

Dr. Wilson realized that many youths who joined the league were in danger of being expelled from school (Charleston has one of the highest expulsion rates in the United States). Knowing that expulsion from middle school and high school are often the beginning of a downward spiral of crime, drug and alcohol use and incarceration, Dr. Wilson initiated PCSmarts. PCSmarts, an interactive computer process that allows young people not to be intimidated by modern day technology, through simplified teaching of computer restoration and programming.

IAE, Inc. is also located at the Administrative Offices, 701 East Bay Street, weekly provides a daily opportunity for a minimum of fifteen (15) at-risk youths and other inner city children to learn computer skills and operation. The computers were donated by Mr. Gerald Novach, CEO, NeuStar Corporation, Washington DC. On site teachers from Trident Technical College (Palmer Campus); the College of Charleston as well as volunteers are available to help with computer skills and other technical learning needs.
