Changing lives everyday

Overview

Agape Ministries of Charleston has been in the forefront of Eastside activities and is currently, in partnership with the City of Charleston and various corporate sponsors, restoring the Josiah Smith Tennent House, an architecturally and historically significant structure on the Eastside.

When the restoration is complete, this building, which once served as an army hospital during the Civil War, will be the home for the Eastside Center for Human Concerns. This building will contain the kinds of services that are difficult to reach for persons residing in inner city poverty. The first floor will house a state-of-the-art child care facility. We will devote the second floor to job training for both men and women. The third floor will house Justified Amnesty, legal services, a Center for Non-Violence and a Community Outreach Partnership Center. We will devote the fourth floor to primary dental care services for the un-/under-employed "low-wealth" citizens of the Enterprise Renewal Community.

The $3.8 million needed to restore the first two stages of the building have been raised and external/internal renovations are complete. The building was dedicated April 1, 2001 and will be ready for occupancy in June 2004. Meanwhile, programs that we will eventually house in the building continue to operate in scattered sites throughout the Enterprise Renewal Community (ERC).

The impact goal is a safer, healthier and gentler community with less poverty, crime, violence, teen pregnancy and other signs of moral, social and economic disintegration.
