Building character

The major purpose for instituting the Charleston InnerCity "Midnight" Basketball Association was as a constructive alternative to violent criminal activities, addressing issues of economic and social deprivation, low commitment to schools, academic failure, low neighborhood attachment, community disorganization as well as providing and illegal substance dependency. Our primary reason for instituting "Midnight" on the inner-city of Charleston's Eastside was to provide year-round, wholesome recreation and afterschool alternatives for at-risk young people, ages 5-16

"Midnight" Basketball Tournament (ages 5-16) - June 1 through August 10

The Charleston InnerCity "Midnight" Basketball Tournament began August 23, 1991, as a result of an anonymous eastside resident's desire to participate in meaningful recreational activity in Mall Park. The tournament is a vehicle which presented a viable alternative to an otherwise troubled neighborhood.

Our primary reason for instituting "Midnight" Basketball on the inner-city of Charleston's Eastside was to provide wholesome recreation for 350 at-risk young people, ages 5-16. It is a constructive alternative to violent criminal activities, addressing issues of economic and social deprivation, low commitment to schools, academic failure, low neighborhood attachment, community disorganization as well as providing and illegal substance dependency. This countywide activity provides young people an opportunity to make positive choices and directly meets how "We become a conduit to the Enterprise Renewal Community through children, youth and families." To date this approach has benefited more 7,000 at-risk young
people.

Year 'Round Clinic (ages 5-10) August 31 - June 31

Academics & Athletics

The "YearRound" Basketball Clinic will offer programs e.g. basketball, football and spelling bee's designed to augment the existing elementary school system's academic pursuits; to teach individuals how to improve the quality of their own and others health, and offers experiences designed to promote quality health habits and knowledge and lastly during their impressionable years, to illustrate for students how to make positive choices as they relate to athletics and academics.

Primary purposes are:

  • Teach students to responsibly participate in solving the national health care crisis by becoming accountable for their health choices and the impact of those choices on self, others, and the environment
  • Utilize academic activities to establish ________ and physical activity to reduce risk of illness and injury and provide relaxation, socialization, and balance in their lives
  • Become intelligent consumers of good healthy habits and information
  • Develop skills consistent with individual levels of human proficiency
  • Enhance creative use of leisure time

Students interested in "YearRound" will have a strong focus on courses in the (prerequisites) e.g. sciences, such as biology, anatomy, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computers.

Last Thought: This approach to academics and athletics will cause the choices made in later years (middle and high school) to be interpreted as tools for a successful transition into adulthood.
